Dog Clicker Training Does Work

dog clicker training, training puppy tips

So you decided to make the big commitment. You and your wife have talked about it but nothing has ever been finalized, until now that is.  You are your wife have decided that it is time for a new family member in your household. Of course, I’m talking about getting that new puppy that you’ve always wanted. With a new puppy comes a lot of new responsibilities but you are ready for them, right.  One of the biggest, besides food, shelter and love is training. You’ve been thinking about how to go about the business of puppy training your new little guy and recently heard some co-workers talking about dog clicker training. This sounded interesting so you decided to do a bit more research.

Training With A Clicker?

Yes, you heard it right.  This is a technique that is quickly becoming a fan favourite with trainers because it works. This training technique involves the use of a clicking device (e.g. a toy noisemaker or similar gadget that will make a clicking noise). Clicker training will use this device to positively reinforce an event marker (i.e. potty training in proper location) to mark a desired response. Yeh, nice definition but what does that really mean?  What follows is an example to illustrate the procedure of dog training with a clicker.

It’s Potty Time

So, one of the first challenges that you’ll face as a new dog owner is teaching your new housemate the proper spot that you want them to use to do their “thing”.  For a new puppy, this can be quite a challenge but with some consistent work you will succeed.  The key to making this work is to be consistent so that your puppy gets to learn the routine. Bring them outside to the bathroom area and let them sniff around a bit. Do not let them leave until they relieve themselves.  When you notice that your puppy is starting to go, give him a verbal cue and then just when he is finishing up, use your clicker and give him a treat. Try not to click too soon or he may stop before he was finished. Awesome, first stage complete.  Now you may have to lead them out to their area, give them their verbal cue and then click, a few times before they understand what you want.  When they start to “get it”, all you’ll need to do is to use your clicker and they should be in motion to their spot to do their thing.  Again practice makes perfect, for both the dog and yourself.

So that is one simple example of how to potty train your new puppy using the dog clicker training technique.  You are going to find that your new puppy is an extremely good student and is going to show you that they want nothing more than to please you. Once you have the potty training technique mastered, you may want to search for other training puppy tips to help you through the other stages of your puppy’s training plan. Keep at it and you will find that in the long run, the extra time spent up front teaching will pay back immensely when your puppy grows up to be a a well trained obedient dog.  Good Luck.
