“Success in life comes not from holding a good hand, but in playing a poor hand well.” ~ Denis Waitley
To the casual observer, successful entrepreneurs and business owners seem to have had a series of lucky breaks or the stars somehow aligned perfectly for their success.
Under the surface, however, there is almost always a series of tests, challenges or difficulties which had to be dealt with and overcome.Rarely in life or business do you receive the perfect “hand.” The real test is indeed learning how to play that poor hand well.
So how do you do that? You must: remain calm, stay confident, be flexible and persist until you succeed.
When the bad hand is dealt what do you do? Do you whine and complain and scream that is isn’t fair? Or, do you calmly looking at what has happened and begin to calculate a path to victory? Staying calm is critical.
Confidence is king when it comes to entrepreneurial card games. The moment you lose your confidence you energy dives, your focus becomes cloudy and other people, including customers and employees, can sense something isn’t right.
Just remember that confidence is never arrogance and true confidence comes from having respect for the challenge and having a plan to pursue.
Which leads us to flexibility. The ability to adapt and adjust “on-the-fly” is probably one of the most important attributes of the successful entrepreneur in the 21st century.
Be sure you are constantly scanning the horizon, exploring new possibilities and creating new ways to solve the problems from the hand you have been dealt.
Finally, the ultimate trait of all great achievers is the ability to persist until you succeed. Even when things don’t look so good, or feel so good, you must dig deep in order to keep driving forward. Persistence is a mind-set – make it yours.
Evaluate your ability to positively deal with a poor hand. How are you doing in the areas of remaining calm, staying confident, being flexible and showing persistence?
These four attributes will enable you to play any poor hand well and any good hand great!
